Summary of the Construction Process
I got a set of plans of Duyfken from "Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation" on February 2nd as shown in Memo1.
I decided to build this ship by the plank-on-bulkhead method and started by making the keel and the frames in February 2007.
Next, I planked the hull with walnut strips.
In May, The rudder and the guns at the stern were installed before deck planking.
The pintles and gudgeons were made of brass as shown in Memo2 and painted in black.
But I decided to place the cannons for all of the 10 gunports of my model.
In June, I made a deck base of plywood and inner linings for bulwarks. Then, I planked the deck and attached the windlass on it.
In August, I made two pumps and 8 guns. Enlarged view of pumps is shown in Memo5. The blackening process of gun barrels is also described in Memo6.
In September, I made the bulkhead after steersman's space. The photo of the bulkhead, which is hidden after completion of the quarterdeck structure, is shown in
Then I planked the forecastle deck and the quarterdeck.
In October, I made the steersman's hutch, the bulkhead and the knightheads. Then, I attached the rails and the ram in December.
In February 2008, I made the lion figure-head. I made this of clay and painted with an acrylic paint.
In April, I made the lowermasts. The joint sections to the top masts are unfamilier structures. The topmasts are scarfed to the lower masts. The drawing by Mr. John. C. Hudoc is shown at Memo8.
In August, I made the top masts.
In December, I attached the lower yards.
I could not find the way of halliards in the photos of Duyfken. I asked Mr. Nicholas Burningham, the designer of the replica Duyfken. His answer is "The doubled halliard tie goes through sheaves on either side of the mast in the cheeks at the hounds (just below the cross trees) ".
After his answer, I noticed that this is the same way as Susan Constant.
I made these following his indication.
In January 2009, I made the fore and main topsail yards, spritsail yard and lateen yard.
In March, I attached the rat-lines for the topmast shrouds and for the mizzen-mast shroud.In April, I made the gunport lids and display stand. Then I attached anchors and flags. The flags were painted with acrylic paint on a used white shirt cloth.
In February 2010, I made the name plate. Then completed.
Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation has full scale plans for model ship building enthusiasts. There are lines plan, general arrangement, deck plans and a basic sail plan. The cost is Aud$80.00.
The pintles and gudgeons which I made of brass for the first time are shown in the photograph. After this, these were painted in black with an acrylic paint.
According to the description on page 56 in reference 3,
"The original Dufken is thought to have carried eight three-pound cannons and four small anti-personnel swivel guns, On long voyages, the guns were carried in the hold."
In May 2007, I got the book "The Colonial Merchantman SUSAN CONSTANT 1605" from Amazon. She was an English ship of 120 tons but launched in 1605, only 10 years later from Duyfken. (Duyfken was built about 1595, as a 110 ton vessel.)
These pumps are made of wood and painted with "gun metal black" for plastic models.
I had not used brass-blackening-solutions.
I show the brass gun barrels at each blackening step in this photo.
Under the quarterdeck, there are two pumps. After these pumps, the whipstaff sticks out of the quarterdeck. The bulkhead is after this whipstaff. These will be hidden after completion of the quarterdeck structure.
This drawing shows the method of scarfing the topmast to the lowermast that was common in Dutch shipbuilding at the time of the Duyfken.
