The 2002 FIFA World Cup Soccer officially started on Friday at Seoul World Cup Stadium with a big upset. First participant team Senegal defeated defending champion France, 1-0 at the opening match of the first World Cup event in Asia.
At Roland Garros, No.4 seed and last year's finalist Kim Clijsters was upset in the 3rd round today by Clarisa Fernandez from Argentina in a straight-sets, 4-6, 0-6. Miss Dokic's 3rd round match with Elena Likhovtseva is scheduled on Saturday morning. They will play at the opening match on the Suzanne Lenglen Court, which starts at 11:00 a.m. (Paris time), for a 4th round berth against either Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia or local Emilie Loit.
Thursday, 30 May, 2002 - Roland Garros
Miss Dokic survived tough 2nd round match at the 2002 French Open today with a three-sets win over former world No.2 Conchita Martinez, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 on the Court-2. She dropped the opening set before fighting back to win the 2nd set in a tie-break with struggling to hold her serves and finally closed off the match in 2 hours and 22 minutes.
After taking a rest tomorrow, she will play her 3rd round match on Saturday against Elena Likhovtseva, who defeated Martina Muller of Germany in a straight-sets, 7-5, 6-4 in the 2nd round earlier today.
Wednesday, 29 May, 2002 - Roland Garros
Miss Dokic made a good start at the 2002 French Open today with a straight-sets win over Emmanuelle Gagliardi, 6-4, 6-2 at the opening match on the Court-1.
In the next round, she will meet last year's doubles partner Conchita Martinez, who defeated Maria Elena Camerin of Italy, 6-3, 6-3 in the 1st round today. They are scheduled to play each other at the 3rd match on the Court-2 tomorrow.
Tuesday, 28 May, 2002 - Roland Garros
For the second day in succession, persistent rain caused a number of 1st round matches to be postponed or suspended until Wednesday in Paris. Miss Dokic, originally scheduled to play today, was also rescheduled to play at the 1st match on the Court-1 tomorrow. The match is due to start at 11:00 a.m. (local time). Meanwhile, Miss Dokic seems not to participate in the doubles competition. The Roland Garros 2002 official website announced today the women's doubles main draw, in which her name was not included.
The 5th seed Justine Henin was upset by Hungarian qualifier Aniko Kapros, 6-4, 1-6, 0-6 in the rain-interrupted opening round today. The 4th seed Kim Clijsters struggled into the 2nd round after winning Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus, 3-6, 6-3, 8-6.
Monday, 27 May, 2002 - Roland Garros
The 2002 Roland Garros began in Paris today without injured stars, Lindsay Davenport (#7) and Martina Hingis (#8). 32 matches in the lower half of the women's singles draw were scheduled for the opening day but delayed by wet weather. Miss Dokic, 7th seed in the singles, will play in the 1st round against Emmanuelle Gagliardi at the 3rd match on the Court-1 on Tuesday, with 1st match beginning at 11:00 a.m. (local time), if weather permits.
Sunday, 26 May, 2002 - Strasbourg International, WTA Rankings
Top-seeded Miss Dokic lost to 2nd seed and defending champion Silvia Farina Elia, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 in the rain-delayed Saturday's final of the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
- However, despite losing in the final her debut appearance at the tournament was quite memorable and she showed she is recovering from troublesome leg injuries in time for her first Grand Slam event of the season, which starts on Monday in Roland Garros, Paris.
The WTA Tour official website released the next week's ranking tables today. There was no change of the top 10's standings. Miss Dokic remains at 9th position in the singles and 12th in the doubles.

Top-seeded Miss Dokic reached her 3rd final of the year with winning 2 singles matches today in the Internationaux de Strasbourg. In the rain-postponed quarter-finals, she defeated Jelena Kostanic after fighting her way back from a set down, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the last 4, where she faced doubles partner Meghann Shaughnessy.
Thursday, 23 May, 2002 - Strasbourg International
The quarter-final matches of the Internationaux de Strasbourg were postponed by rain on Thursday. Only one match was played, 5th seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria leading Austria's Barbara Schwartz, 6-4, 1-2 when play was suspended. Both quarter-final and semi-final action was rescheduled on Friday. Miss Dokic is due to play against Jelena Kostanic at the 1st match on the Court-4. The winner will meet either 3rd seed Meghann Shaughnessy or 8th seed Emmanuelle Gagliardi at the 3rd match on the Centre Court.

Miss Dokic advanced to the quarter-finals in the singles today with a 6-4 7-5 win over Tina Pisnik at the Internationaux de Strasbourg. She will next meet Jelena Kostanic, who upset 7th seed Daja Bedanova, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the 1st round on Monday and ousted German qualifier Vanessa Henke, 6-4, 6-4 in the 2nd round today.
Wednesday, 22 May, 2002 (1) - Strasbourg International, Roland Garros
Miss Dokic advanced to the quarter-finals in the doubles competition with partner Meghann Shaughnessy after defeating Anca Barna and Shelley Stephens, 6-1, 6-2 at her debut appearance at the Internationaux de Strasbourg yesterday. The 2nd seeded team will next meet qualifiers of Jennifer Hopkins from the United States and Croatian Jelena Kostanic at the 4th (final) match on the Court-4 today. Miss Dokic is also scheduled to play in the 2nd round of the singles against Tina Pisnik at today's 2nd match on the Centre Court.
This year's 2nd Grand Slam tournament will be held from 27th May at Roland Garros in Paris. The ITF announced that the draw will be held at midday on Friday 24th May in the TV restaurant in the South Zone of the venue. The women's singles final is scheduled on Saturday 8th June and the women's doubles final will be played on Sunday 9th June. The women's qualifying tournament begins on Wednesday. 12 qualifiers will be announced on Saturday. The tournament's official website has announced 32 seeds in the singles main draw. Miss Dokic was seeded 7th, 2 places above her ranking, with the absence of Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis due to injuries. Top seed is defending champion Jennifer Capriati of the United States.

The Internationaux de Strasbourg official website announced the singles main draw later yesterday. Miss Dokic was seeded 1st in the singles and was handed a bye in the 1st round. She will meet Slovene Tina Pisnik, who advanced to the 2nd round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Lilia Osterloh of the United States in the 1st round today. She has been also drawn to face 3rd seed Meghann Shaughnessy in the semi-finals.
In Rome, 4th seed Serena Williams won her 3rd title of the season on clay-court with defeating 5th seed Justine Henin in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the rain-delayed final of the Italian Open on Sunday.
The WTA Tour official website released new ranking tables today. Miss Dokic still remains at 9th position in the singles and 12th in the doubles. Jennifer Capriati returned the top spot in the singles rankings by reaching the semi-finals of the Italian Open last week.

Miss Dokic seems to participate in a tier3 event, Les Internationaux de Strasbourg 2002, this week. The final tuneup clay-court tournament for Roland Garros will be held from 20th to 25th May at the Centre Sportif de Hautepierre in a western suburb of Strasbourg, France. She will be the top seed in the singles and the 2nd seed will be defending champion Silvia Farina Elia of Italy. The main draws will be available soon.
5th seed Justine Henin and 4th seed Serena Williams reached the final of the Italian Open in Rome. In Sunday's final, they will play a rematch of their German Open final at Berlin, where Justine Henin defeated Serena Williams in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5). Injured Justine Henin defeated 3rd seeded fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters, 7-5, 6-2 in the semi-finals on Saturday. Meanwhile, Serena Williams upset 2nd seed Jennifer Capriati, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the semi-finals after defeating Anastasia Myskina, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately Miss Dokic was not able to defend the first senior crown of her career. She lost to tough Russian Anastasia Myskina, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 in the 3rd round later Thursday. In the quarter-finals, Anastasia Myskina will face 4th seed Serena Williams at Friday's evening session on the Court Central.
The latest WTA Tour Weekly Poll asked which of the following 5 players will win a Grand Slam singles title first. The result of 51,775 voters is as follows:

Miss Dokic returned to the Court Central of Foro Italico as a defending champion today and advanced to the 3rd round after surviving a tough 3 set battle against Anna Smashnova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at the opening match. She appeared on court with her leg not bandaged.
The Sanex Heroes website offered an Online Live Chat with Miss Dokic, which was held from 5:30 p.m. (Rome time) this evening.
Next up for Miss Dokic is Anastasia Myskina of Russia, who upset 11th seed Daniela Hantuchova, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round and ousted Magui Serna of Spain, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2 in the 2nd round today. They are scheduled to play each other at the 4th match on the Pallacorda Court on Thursday.

After receiving a 1st-round bye, Miss Dokic will play her first match in Rome with Anna Smashnova, who ousted local Adriana Serra-Zanetti in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 at the opening match on the Court Central today. Anna Smashnova jumped up to 21st spot from 35th in the WTA Tour rankings after upsetting Kim Clijsters and Daniela Hantuchova en route to the semi-finals in Berlin last week.

The main draw of the Italian Open started today. The 2000 Roland Garros champion Mary Pierce advanced to the 2nd round after defeating qualifier Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian of Switzerland, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, while 10th seed Meghann Shaughnessy became the first seed to make an opening-round exit with a 3-6 3-6 loss to qualifier Asa Svensson from Sweden.

Miss Dokic seems to concentrate on the singles competition only in Rome this week. Federazione Italiana Tennis official website announced the doubles main draw, in which her name was not included.
In Berlin, 5th seed Justine Henin won her first title of the year with a 6-2 1-6 7-6 (5) win over 4th seed Serena Williams in the final of the German Open on Sunday. She upset top seed Jennifer Capriati, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday to reach her 4th final of the season.
In Warsaw, Elena Bovina of Russia won her first ever WTA Tour title by defeating top seed Henrieta Nagyova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 in Sunday's final of the J&S Cup.

Miss Dokic has been committed to play in the next week's Tennis Masters Series of Roma, another major tuneup tournament for the French Open, to defend her title as the First Time Champion. This tier1 clay-court event will be held from 13th to 19th May at Parco del Foro Italico in Rome, Italy. Federazione Italiana Tennis official website announced the singles main draw today. Miss Dokic was seeded 6th in the bottom half of the draw. Top 8 seeds in a 56 field will receive byes into the 2nd round. She will meet either the giant-killer Anna Smashnova of Israel or local Adriana Serra-Zanetti in the 2nd round. She has been also drawn to face a tough task against 11th seed Daniela Hantuchova again in the 3rd round and 4th seed Serena Williams in the quarter-finals. Top 3 seeds are Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters. - She is unfortunate in coming into the tournament with a troublesome leg injury. However, since she wishes to continue to play without taking a rest, we can only hope she will be able to manage to find her form.
Friday, 10 May, 2002 - Eurocard Ladies German Open
Miss Dokic fought on court in spite of her injury, but unfortunately lost to Daniela Hantuchova, 2-6, 3-6 in the 3rd round at the German Open yesterday. The tournament's official website has not provided her post-match interview article, so we have still not enough information as to how much serious her injury is.

Miss Dokic seems to have overcome her right hamstring injury. She fought her way back from a set down to defeat Mary Pierce, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 on the Centre Court A yesterday and set up a meeting with Slovakia's teenager Daniela Hantuchova today. This 3rd round clash is scheduled at today's 2nd match on the Court B with the 1st match beginning at 12:00 noon (local time).

Miss Dokic reached the semi-finals of the Betty Barclay Cup by defeating 4th seeded Justine Henin, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) in Friday's quarter-finals. However, she retired at the 2nd set of Saturday's semi-final match against 2nd seeded Kim Clijsters. She was unable to continue due to a right hamstring strain. She also withdrew from the doubles competition. Kim Clijsters defeated defending champion Venus Williams, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final on Sunday.
The WTA Tour official website released new ranking tables today. Miss Dokic is holding her 9th spot in the singles, but moved down to 12th spot in the doubles.

On Friday, the ITF announced the draw for the Fed Cup World Group Play Offs, which will be played from 20th to 21st July. The winning nations in the World Group Play Offs will secure places in the 2003 World Group. The losing nations will take part in their respective Regional Qualifying Group 1 events in 2003. The World Group 1st Round loser Australia will host Netherlands.

Miss Dokic moved into the quarter-finals of the Betty Barclay Cup by defeating doubles partner Conchita Martinez for the 3rd time in 8 career meetings, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the 4th match on the Center Court today. She will next meet 4th seeded Justine Henin also at the 4th match on the Center Court tomorrow for a Saturday's semi-final berth against either 2nd seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium or unseeded Barbara Schett of Austria. Justine Henin of Belgium won over Australia's No.1 player Nicole Pratt, 6-3, 6-4 in a rematch of their Fed Cup World Group 1st round tie last weekend.

Miss Dokic progressed to the 2nd round of the Betty Barclay Cup with a 6-3 0-6 6-2 win over Russian Anastasia Myskina in the opening round yesterday. She reportedly told about the 73 minutes match as: "There are so many things to think about when it's cold and I definitely lost my concentration in the second set. Usually I have trouble adjusting, but I did that well in the end." Miss Dokic will be on the opposite side of the net to her doubles partner Conchita Martinez in the next round. Conchita Martinez, 1995 champion and 1996 finalist of this clay-court event, ousted local wild card Marlene Weingartner, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the following match on the same court yesterday.
