Jennifer cruises, Venus struggles, Dokic upset
   By Matthew Cronin
   Thursday, May 29, 2003

While Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters sizzled, Venus
Williams struggled and Jelena Dokic fizzled in the second
   round on Thursday.

Former champion Capriati overwhelmed France's Marion Bartoli
with a 6-3 6-0 victory, while second seeded Clijsters pasted
   Germany's Marlene Weingartner 6-2 6-2.

The third seeded Williams took over an hour to find her range
and put down a spirited challenge by Evie Dominikovic 6-3 4-6
6-2, while Tina Pisnik upset the slumping No10 Dokic 4-6 6-3
   6-2.

Capriati was in prime form, going for the lines, muscling back
deep shots and never doubting that she had proper weaponry to
   subdue Bartoli.

"I played extremely well, " Capriati said. "I was ready for
whatever this girl might give me. I was playing a French girl
with potential and I was really on my toes. These youngsters
that come up, they play without pressure. But I'm moving well
   and playing well."

Clijsters continued her torrid play, outslugging the tricky
German. The Belgian was off the court in a flash, just in time
to catch a few sets of her boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt's three
and half hour triumph over Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

"Its always tough to play these matches where you don't have a
lot of rallies," Clijsters said. "But you always have to
fight, even though it wasn't my best tennis today."

Williams committed 68 unforced errors, lost her serve five
times and needed nearly two hours to move on. The No110
-ranked Dominikovic mixed up the pace on Williams, who has
been struggling with a stomach injury and has won only one
   tournament this year.

"I can't stay at this level and still continue to do as well
as I'd like to at this tournament," Venus said. "I need to
play more and more points, definitely not to rush my shots.
But I feel I'm coming along."

But before recovering her range in the third set, Williams
lost her serve twice in a row to lose the second set and was
spraying groundies. But in the third, she began to move better
   and served with authority.

"I've got to find my balance and find it soon," said Williams
who lost to her sister, Serena, in last year's final.

Dokic, who is in the midst of her worse year as a pro, looked
confused and often listless in falling to the Slovenian Pisnik.

"I take losses very hard but when you have more losses than
wins then you have to start reassessing things," said Dokic,
who hired a new coach, Steffi Graf's former tutor, Heinz
Gunthardt, at the year's outset. "I'm so low on confidence
that I need to get it up. Maybe I will have a bad year and
learn from it and then get back."

The 20-year-old has played 13 tournaments this year without
winning a title and hasn't managed to pass the second round in
   nine events.

"I'm struggling with my form and nothing seems to be working,"
she said. "My head just went a little bit and when things go
wrong it's hard to get back. I'm struggling with myself and
it's difficult when you have to deal with that. I haven't had
slumps like this before and I'll just have to work at it and
hopefully things will turn around. I can't get any further
back than I am so I can only get better."

   Sad Dokic slumps again
   From correspondents in Paris
   May 30, 2003

JELENA DOKIC looked a lost soul at Roland Garros today after another
defeat in a season blighted by a family feud and uncertainty about
   her nationality.

"I take losses very difficultly but when you have more losses than
wins then you have to start reassessing things," said Dokic after
   her 4-6 6-3 6-2 second-round loss to Slovenia's Tina Pisnik.

"I'm so low on confidence that I need to get it up. Maybe I will
have a bad year and learn from it and then get back."

Struggling to cope without the influence of her father Damir, who
cut off ties with his daughter because of her relationship with
Brazilian racing driver Enrique Bernoldi, Dokic's form has
   nose-dived in 2003.

Known to be a tennis workaholic, the 20-year-old has played 13
tournaments this season and has each time left empty handed, failing
even to progress beyond the second round in nine events.

"My life on the court is different from the one I have off the court
and I try to keep that separate," said Dokic. "I'm struggling with
my form and nothing seems to be working.

"My head just went a little bit and when things go wrong it's hard
   to get back.

"I'm struggling with myself and it's difficult when you have to deal
   with that."

Her nationality is also posing problems for Dokic as she is
currently ineligible to take part in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The Yugoslav-born athlete first competed as an Australian after her
family moved there in 1994, but she took Yugoslav citizenship in
2001 in protest against what she considered a lack of support from
   her adopted country.

She is now considering playing under the Australian flag again – as
she did at the 2000 Games in Sydney – so that she can have a crack
   at Olympic gold.

"I need to get my game back on track before deciding about the
Olympics or the Fed Cup," she said. "I'll make the decision when I'm
   ready.

"I haven't had slumps like this before and I'll just have to work at
it and hopefully things will turn around.
"I can't get any further back then I am so I can only get better."

   Pravo na zastoj
   Goran ČVOROVIĆ 5/30/2003, 7:05:22 PM

   Od stalnog dopisnika

NE IDE, pa ne ide. Od početka godine, škripi u reketu Jelene
DokiE Kolo - dva, i preseli se u gledalište. I Rolan Garos

izbacila mnogo lopti, zatim mentalno, jer nisam odigrala
prave, velike poene.
   "Novosti".

   Gde je bio preokret?

   - Ona je igrala dobro u drugom setu, iako sam tada joEmogla
da se vratim u meE Ali, nisam. Sve je preokrenuo izgubljen
gust prvi gem u trećem setu.

I sedmi, posle dvadeset razmenjenih poena?

   - Poslednjih pet mečeva sve sam izgubila ovako, u tri seta.
Čak sam u tri ili četiri dobila prvi set. Sve se ponavlja, iz
meča u meE Ne igram konstantno, imam puno padova, igram dobro
   pa loše, zato i gubim.

   Šta, iskreno, utiče na to?

   - Ne znam. Nisam u formi veEpet-šest meseci. Teško je reći
zašto. Možda sam čak i psihički umorna. Nadam se da ću se brzo
   vratiti u formu.

   teniserka.
